Calgary Grey Cup Committee – A proud tradition

In 1948 a group of spirited Calgarians chartered a 14 car train to Toronto and named it the "Stampeder Special". It included one car for a dozen horses and a chuckwagon, a baggage car dance floor, a bar car and a diner and more than 250 western dressed fans. After three days and nights of partying on the train they hit Toronto with gusto and continued to whoop it up including a horse ride through Union Station and to the Royal York Hotel, where the legend of the ride through the lobby was born. There was a parade, fiddlers, square dancing and pancakes with bacon and the odd mixed drink or two.

The Calgary Grey Cup Committee was formed out of the passion and spirit developed by this energetic group of Calgary fans. Our volunteer members attend the Grey Cup festival in the host city and proudly promote Calgary and Alberta wherever we go. We bring our own western band, host Stampede style pancake breakfasts for thousands of fans, arrange an inner city school visit with white hats, clowns, entertainment and provide a donation to support the school’s needs. We also participate in the Grey Cup parade with horses, chuckwagons and band, and, as tradition dictates, enter a local hotel on horseback during our VIP Committee reception. 

The Calgary Grey Cup Committee is a recognized organization that values and showcases western hospitality, community involvement, Calgary traditions and proud to promote and represent our City at Grey Cup.
