Calgary Grey Cup Committee – A proud tradition

In 1948, a group of spirited Calgarians chartered a 14-car train to Toronto, naming it the “Stampeder Special.” It included one car for a dozen horses and a chuckwagon, a baggage car dance floor, a bar car, a diner, and more than 250 western-dressed fans.

After three days and nights of partying on the train, they arrived in Toronto, brimming with energy, and continued to celebrate. The festivities, steeped in Calgary’s unique traditions, included a memorable horse ride through Union Station and to the Royal York Hotel, where the legendary story of riding through the hotel lobby was born. The celebrations featured a parade, fiddlers, square dancing, pancakes with bacon, and a ‘few’ mixed drinks, all showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Calgary.

The Calgary Grey Cup Committee, a shining example of Calgary’s community spirit, was built out of the passion and energy of the Stampeder Special.

Our volunteer members, deeply rooted in the community, proudly promote the vibrant culture and rich heritage of Calgary and Alberta at the Grey Cup Festival annually. Thousands of football fans can expect an unforgettable experience, including our Western band – High Stepping Daddy, Stampede-style pancake breakfasts, and Tuffy, our famous horse who checks into our host hotel and makes a special appearance during our VIP Committee reception.

We also participate in the Grey Cup Parade with horses, chuckwagons, and a band. Additionally, we arrange an inner-city school visit with white hats, clowns, and entertainment and donate funds to help support the school’s needs.

The Calgary Grey Cup Committee is a recognized organization that values and showcases Western hospitality and Calgary traditions. Our commitment to community involvement is unwavering, and we strive to make a positive impact wherever we go, including at the Grey Cup, where we proudly represent our city.
